Even having social media or technical skills doesn’t help older workers get hired. We expect to be compensated according to our skill set and job title instead of being cut from the employment pool because often younger graduates are willing to start with smaller salary in order to prove themselves, some don’t have mortgages and families yet or share a home with parents or room mates so their cost of living is less. Right now I so social media support for an Early Childhood Consulting Training Team but I only got that because the CEO personally selected me based on the years I worked with him across the country first. If I had sought a similar job on my own a young techie would have been me out because I would have been seen as an old fuddie dud wading through a tech jungle in ignorant bliss. Not true of course. It is true that age discrimination is alive and well and those of us who have not only aged but have hands on experience, life experiences, and years of multi-tasking around jobs, family, upgrading skills, etc. are being cast aside for those younger workers.
