Stores Push Sugary Foods to Children

Obesity often has a direct link to diet but few businesses care

Stores target children with eye catching displays of sugary foods

Stores are stocking food shelves with hi caloric sugar laden items

Knowing childhood obesity and diabetes are chronic problems among children and teens in both the United States and developing nations, stores are still more interested in selling food stuffs that appeal to children, which typically have a very high sugar and fat content. While some only contain natural sugars, many have added sugars in them as well. High profit margins are more important than the health of both children and adults. On a recent trip to the local super Walmart for milk I was shocked to see the center food isle running through the grocery area of the store stocked with variety of high sugar goods. There was quite a variety of items available.

Among the items were bottles of strawberry fruity pebbles syrup and even pancake mix containing bits of sugar-coated cereal, baking kits with sugar coated cereal either in the mix, icing, or a topping. The same shelves held a variety of marshmallow and cereal bits in separate containers, and sprinkles in different shapes and colors made from pure sugar.
