The End of the Amtrak SW Corridor Has Been Extended to Sep. 2019
Most of the Midwest and Southwest would lose a primary way to travel
Traveling home to Hutchinson, KS, from a four day visit to my thirty year old daughter and her boyfriend in Albuquerque, I heard that may be my last trip west. As cited in a recent op-ed in the Chicago Tribune on June 29th, Amtrak, has served areas with few public transportation alternatives for forty-seven years, along with passengers on the busy Washington-Boston Northeast Corridor. Among Amtrak’s major travelers are those without a vehicle, are too old or infirm to drive hundreds of miles, want a more comfortable and relaxed ride with room to move around in, or want to experience the changing landscapes and the wildlife that can be seen along the way. Others, like myself can’t afford to fly, not to mention layovers, overbooked flights, or weather delays.
A multitude chooses travel by passenger trains
Amtrak is used by college students going home for the holidays or school breaks, grandparents wanting time with grandchildren, and by those wanting a more relaxed travel experience than a plane or bus can offer. After hearing Amtrak will be closing…
